Benadryl Usage in Treatment of Eczema

Benadryl is an antihistamine drug marketed by McNeil-PPC, a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson. The active ingredient in the drug is a chemical called diphenhydramine, which has many properties that makes it an ideal choice for treating allergies. It is also frequently used by people with atopic dermatitis to reduce itching.

Because of its fast action and availability, Benadryl is often used as first aid when dealing with eczema related itching. People with eczema tend to itch more at night, so they use this drug because it has sedative effects and helps them fall to sleep.

Diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl, is a potent, fast acting chemical that is used to treat allergic symptoms, common colds, insomnia, and even motion sickness. It is usually taken orally, although it can be administered topically in the form of a cream, or intravenously in cases of life-threatening allergic reactions used in addition to epinephrine. It can be administered orally and topically.

Side Effects of Benadryl

Benadryl is marketed as an antihistamine, a drug that treats allergies. It can be used to treat other conditions as well. In people with eczema, it is used to treat itching. It is usually administered orally.

Some of the possible side effects include:

  • Dry mouth and throat
  • Increased heart rate
  • Urinary retention
  • Sleepiness

It is generally a good idea to consult a doctor before starting any new drug. The doctor should be informed on any pre-existing conditions, especially those that could be made worse by the possible side effects of this medicine, such as urinary retention, prostate enlargement, high blood pressure, heart problems, and others.

Some of the side-effects, such as sleepiness, may actually be desired by people whose eczema itches more in the night. On the other hand, the same side-effect can be dangerous for people that operate heavy machinery or drive professionally.

Symptoms of Eczema

Benadryl is a safe and effective way to get rid of the itching that is caused by eczema, at least for a while. The cause of eczema is still unknown and the condition is incurable, so treatment options are aimed at the symptoms instead at the cause. The symptoms include red and dry skin, blisters, scaly and cracked skin, and itching.

The drug won't help with dry skin, but it will prevent people from scratching. Only people who have experienced the intense itching eczema brings, can possibly understand the importance of this medicine in eczema treatment.
